In a landmark move aimed at addressing Israel’s ongoing shortage of medical professionals while promoting social integration, the Israeli government has approved a new initiative to support the entry of Chareidim (ultra-Orthodox Jews) into the field of medical studies. The proposal, jointly introduced by Health Minister Uriel Busso and Jerusalem Affairs Minister Meir Porush, was developed in coordination with the Ministry of Labor and received government approval on Monday.

At the core of the initiative is the formation of an inter-ministerial task force that will design a comprehensive plan to enable Chareidi participation in medical education. The team will be led by the Directors-General of the Health and Labor Ministries and will work in close cooperation with the Jerusalem Ministry, the Authority for Economic-Social Development in the Chareidi Sector, and the Council for Higher Education.

The task force is expected to submit a detailed set of recommendations within 90 days. These will include the creation of tailored pre-academic preparatory courses, structured personal and professional support systems throughout the duration of medical studies, and institutional adjustments aimed at easing the integration of Chareidi students into Israel’s broader healthcare system. The program also intends to address potential cultural and religious challenges by offering accommodations that respect Chareidi values and lifestyle.

A key focus of the initiative is the strengthening of public healthcare services in Jerusalem. The program seeks to cultivate a new generation of medical professionals from within the Chareidi community, with the goal of enhancing medical care in the capital city and establishing a local medical reserve that can benefit the wider public.

Health Minister Uriel Busso highlighted the dual significance of the move, stating: “The integration of Chareidim in medical studies is a national goal of the highest social and health importance. With the continued shortage of doctors in Israel, particularly in Jerusalem’s hospitals, this initiative represents a historic opportunity. It combines visionary inclusivity with a practical solution to one of our country’s most pressing healthcare challenges.”

Jerusalem Affairs Minister Meir Porush emphasized that the initiative will be designed to respect the unique religious and cultural needs of the Chareidi population. “This is an important step to strengthen Jerusalem’s healthcare system, while providing a dignified and appropriate framework for Chareidim to enter the medical profession. We are committed to ensuring this path preserves their mesorah and way of life.”

Labor Minister Yoav Ben Tzur added that this integration aligns with broader national efforts to promote economic development through inclusivity. “The key to advancing our labor market is the inclusion of diverse populations in high-skilled, well-paying sectors. Enabling Chareidim to join the medical field will not only strengthen our healthcare infrastructure but also offer them meaningful and rewarding professional opportunities.”

As Israel continues to grapple with a critical shortage of physicians specially in Jerusalem the newly approved plan offers a promising pathway for both improving healthcare and enhancing participation of the Chareidi population in national life.
