Tensions Rise at Sea as Activist Flotilla Heads for Gaza
Greta’s Flotilla: IDF Vows to Block Gaza-Bound Aid Ship
The IDF states it is prepared to act against the "Freedom Flotilla", which includes climate activist Greta Thunberg, as the vessel Madleen nears Gaza with humanitarian aid.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have issued a warning regarding the approaching vessel Madleen, part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which is en route to the Gaza Strip carrying humanitarian aid. Among the 12 activists on board is Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.
The Madleen departed from Catania, Italy, on June 1, aiming to deliver supplies such as baby formula, flour, rice, diapers, water filters, hygiene products, and medical equipment to Gaza. The voyage is intended as a protest against Israel's blockade of the territory.
IDF spokesperson Brigadier General Effie Defrin stated, "The IDF is prepared to operate on all fronts, including in the maritime arena. We will act accordingly."
The IDF has decided that the Madleen will not be permitted to approach or dock in Gaza, with officials expressing concerns about setting a precedent that could undermine the blockade.
Activists aboard the Madleen have reported being monitored by drones during their journey. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has emphasized that their mission is a peaceful effort to deliver aid and draw international attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
This voyage follows a previous incident in May, where another vessel from the coalition was reportedly damaged by drones in international waters near Malta.
The Madleen is expected to reach the vicinity of Gaza by June 7. The IDF has not disclosed specific actions it may take but has reiterated its readiness to respond as deemed necessary.
